A room made for living

When I moved into my apartment four years ago I couldn’t wait to start decorating.  I was starting this new life as a single parent and wanted a home that not only reflected our personalities but one that was warm, peaceful and welcoming.  A home I and my kids could look forward to after a long day of hard work.

In the past, I always painted a bright accent wall in my living room and, because my then husband had a lot of collectors items and things to do with his hobbies, I was always surrounded by stuff.  In my new life I wanted something different, something organized, muted and “zen”.

My very first purchase in my pursuit of zen was a sunburst round wall mirror followed by a classic brown couch. Those two items would set the tone for the somewhat modern look I ended up with.

But the piece that inspired the living room color scheme was a painting I bought from an online art store

All of my purchases after would tie into the colors and feel of this painting.

Here is a before picture of the space.  It is of a unit identical to mine but with a less desirable view (sadly, I lost my “before” pictures).

And here is the space after a few trips to Ikea, Target, HomeDepot, Home Goods and adding some personal touches.

I recently upgraded to a Joss and Main coffee table and made a few small changes

Four years later, it is still a work in progress, but I can honestly say that when we walk into our house, it feels like home.
